Pool Safety for Your Curious Cat this Summer

While it’s true that most cats don’t like getting wet, when you’ve got a pool in your backyard, it’s important to recognize that water safety is just as important for cats as it is for children. The following pool safety tips will help you protect your feline friends!

Monitor Cats’ Safety During Their First Exposure to the Pool

If you’re introducing a new pet to your backyard, spend some time with them while they explore. This can help you to monitor their curiosity and identify anything that might be a temptation for them.

For example, if your cat jumps out onto floaties left in the pool, you might decide to deflate them when they aren’t in use or store them up on your deck to prevent your kitten from falling in.

Keeping Fresh Water Available is a Safety Measure to Your Cats

Especially in the warm summer months, make sure to keep a fresh bowl of water available to your cat at all times. Otherwise, your cat may be tempted to drink the pool water, which can be harmful to its digestive system.

Dry Your Cat’s Ears After a Pool Mishap

If you have an outdoor cat that has fallen into the pool, make sure to dry them off thoroughly from ears to tail. Pool water can cause ear infections that are difficult to treat.

You can prevent an infection by using a soft, clean towel to dry the ears. Ask your vet to show you how deeply to dry the ear, though, since breaching the inner ear could cause damage.

Counteract the Effects of Pool Chemicals

Chemicals in swimming pool water can dry out your own skin and hair. It will have a similar effect on your cat’s fur. Since cats use their tongue to bathe themselves, failing to remove these chemicals from the fur can lead to the cat swallowing harmful substances.

While it’s sometimes tricky to do, rinse your cat off in a shower or bathtub as soon after they leave the pool as possible. This will be enough to wash away the chemicals in their fur.
